Abaco, Bahamas

Abaco, Bahamas is a group of islands and cays in the northwest portion of the Bahamas, where each cay has such a different personality, each offering an excellent vacation destination with lots of diversity. Abaco offers the best combination of technology and tradition, putting a spell on people and making them fall in love with the life style of the Abacos. There are no high rises, or Atlantis casino to be found here. The pace is “Bahamian Time”, which means it is slower and more relaxed than the big cities. Daylight offers an enormous amount of activities, including diving, snorkeling, fishing, island hopping, beachcombing, and pure relaxation. Nightlife is limited to a few choice established restaurants, grill & chill bars and clubs, but enjoyable never the less. A great excuse to now invest in prime Abaco real estate anywhere on the island.

Abaco is comprised of one large island with a group of barrier cays, occupying the second largest land mass in the Bahamas. The mainland is known as Great Abaco and Little Abaco, extending 130 miles long and rarely more than 4 miles wide. To the east of Great Abaco Island, a chain of smaller cays are located two to six miles offshore, providing a natural barrier from the Atlantic Ocean, and forming a protected body of water, known as the Sea of Abaco. These waters have been called the “sailing capital of the world”, making for one of the most popular cruising grounds for both pleasure boaters and avid sports fishermen alike. When boating within these waters, land is always in sight and the cays are usually no more than 10 to 40 minutes apart, making island hopping plenty of fun. A popular trend is renting your own boat and touring the cays at your own pace. On some of the cays, this is the only form of transportation. For confident boaters, the boats are easy to operate and usually have an open hull, center console steering, outboard motor, and T top/Bimini top. There are several boat rental companies throughout the area, offering a variety of sizes to meet your personal needs. The island has two well established ferry boat services to most of the outer cays with scheduled times and daily round trips.

At night, relax under the brilliant, twinkling stars, listen to a local band, or make new friends at the local “hang out”. The memories created in the Abaco Islands will be ones you will cherish for a lifetime. The friendships made here will bring you back again. If you are considering investing in real estate within prestigious Treasure Cay or other locations on Abaco, to realize your dreams of a vacation getaway residence, a retirement home or investment property, let Abaco Estate Services assist you in locating that choice property, including luxury beachfront homes, canal waterfront lots, ocean waterfront lots, canal front homes, condominiums and acreage on the Mainland of Abaco, Treasure Cay, Marsh Harbour, Leisure Lee and all the surrounding offshore Cays. Other developments or communities you can also consider are Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club, Abaco Club on Winding Bay & Schooner Bay. Future developments such as Sandbank Landing & Marina & Fisherman’s Paradise Marina are the newest on the island of Abaco.

Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas

With only one stoplight in the middle of this town and the only one on all of Abaco, Marsh Harbour is the largest town in Abaco, with a population of about 4,000+. Marsh Harbour offers an interesting variety of shopping, providing visitors with the best selection of goods and services. Restaurants peek out from all the streets and abound every where. You will have many eateries to choose from, they vary from Mom and Pop style serving Bahamian cuisine, waterfront restaurants, pizza shops, taverns to a more island formal elegant dining experience.

There are many activities to experience from snorkeling on Mermaid's Reef, with its variety of tropical fish, to taking diving trips. The Abaco Outback tours are exceptional and come highly recommended, visit one of the many island Blue Holes or Abaco Parrots located in our National Park. The National Park is managed by the Bahamas National Trust and is utilized by locals and bird watchers from all over the world. Taxis are available in Marsh Harbour, along with rental cars, bicycle rentals and scooter rentals. These forms of transportation make it possible to get around easily and you can drive north to Treasure Cay and Cooper's Town or south to Sandy Point, Cherokee Sound and Little Harbour, all on the Abaco mainland. Either direction is pleasing to sight-seeing and exploring secluded beaches.

Some visitors may wish to take advantage of local boat rentals and enjoy sightseeing and cruising the mainland Abaco shoreline or the many offshore cays at their own pace. This is recommended if you have good boating experience and know the area. There are several boat rental companies if you want to be water independent, but if you would rather “play it safe”, Albury's Ferry Service makes daily trips to most of the cays, making it easy for a day trip to Elbow Cay, Great Guana Cay, and Man-O-War Cay. Round-trip fares available on the regular scheduled ferry and special charters may be arranged at any time.

Treasure Cay, Abaco, Bahamas

Boasting one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world, this is a perfect family spot for all ages. Treasure Cay offers a variety of activities including water sports, deep water sports fishing, popular bone fishing, tennis courts or a round of golf on the challenging 18-hole championship golf course. One of the first loyalist settlements in Abaco was at Carleton Point, the most northern point of Treasure Cay Beach. Now is a great time to invest in Treasure Cay real estate or any other Abaco property on the island.

The community name “Treasure Cay” is somewhat of a misnomer, as Treasure Cay is in fact a long, thin peninsula attached to the Abaco mainland and completely accessible by vehicle. The gated resort community of Treasure Cay is the second largest town in Abaco and the most relaxed one. The majority of the town population consists of retired individuals, enjoying a permanent or seasonal relaxed life style in tropical surroundings. Whether you are looking for an Abaco vacation rental beachfront home, beach villa, beachfront condo, or a canal front home, or wish to retire, Treasure Cay offers a unique and tranquil tropical getaway destination, with a lot of Bahamian charm. There are no big city worries here, your only decisions will be, “what to do today” and “how the weather will be”. You truly set your own leisurely pace of living. Treasure Cay is located on a peninsula, an extension of the mainland of Abaco, and features world famous Treasure Cay Beach, with its 3-1/2 miles of pristine, powdery white sand beach. On the opposite side of the peninsula are the fantastic canal waterways and first class Treasure Cay Marina with private homes, condominiums and the Treasure Cay Resort and Marina. Tiny shops abound, offering everything from a full service restaurant, bar, bakery, grocery stores, duty free shopping, dive shop, boat rental, car rental, scooter and bike rental and golf cart rentals can be found. Without a doubt, Treasure Cay offers some of the choicest beachfront properties on Abaco, or if you are a boating enthusiast, Treasure Cay Marina and harbor, or your choice of private canal front properties provide protected deep water dockage for your pleasure vessel.

    To the north of
Treasure Cay you can arrange to see the Abaco wild horses, the farms and the most popular fresh water “blue hole” in Abaco, or stay in Treasure Cay and play a round of golf at the Treasure Cay championship golf course, arrange a charter fishing expedition from Treasure Cay Marina, or simply st at the beach, have a drink, eat a hamburger and take a nap on the powdery beaches in paradise.

Leisure Lee, Abaco Bahamas

On the island of Abaco, The Bahamas there is a little haven of peace called Leisure Lee. Located between the commercial centre of Marsh Harbour and the resort of Treasure Cay, Leisure Lee is a residential development of around 100 acres with over 5000 feet of protected canals, providing the perfect port for the Sea of Abaco. Leisure Lee at Joe's Creek is located on the mainland of Abaco, approximately 10 miles south of Treasure Cay. This Sea of Abaco waterfront residential community features vacant canal properties and canalfront homes for sale. With its direct access to the Sea of Abaco and just a short distance from the deep Atlantic prime fishing waters, Leisure Lee is the ideal location for a fisherman's dream residence, vacation get away or investment. Leisure Lee has a secure, deep water, protected canal system, plus a beautiful sandy beach front on the Sea of Abaco. With its close proximity to Treasure Cay this is a popular spot for leisurely canal living within a more secluded and tranquil environment.

Great Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas

Great Guana Cay is one of the smallest and least populated cays within the Abaco Bahamas chain of islands, but with a lot of colorful local personality. This cay and its main settlement of Guana Cay is home for less than 300 permanently residing people. It is a place where you will feel “time has stood still”. There are no museums to explore, nor a large selection of shops or restaurants, but this charming cay offers plenty of outdoor water sport activities to satisfy any visitor.

On the Atlantic Ocean side of Great Guana Cay, one will find a spectacular five plus miles of wide, powdery white sandy beachfront, fringed with coral reefs and beach side palm groves. The coral reef is conveniently situated just a short distance offshore and extends along most of the length of Guana Cay. For your shopping needs, there is a local grocery store, liquor store, and several small gift shops. Two full service restaurants offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for those days you want to indulge in a full service meal in a comfortable environment. The major attractions are Nippers Bar-N- Grill where having a good time has reached a new height in Abaco. Nippers is located on the Atlantic Ocean beach with a two level pool bar (open for lunch and dinner). The dining is open air, very casual (no shoes required). On Sunday, a wild boar roast buffet starts at noon. Larger developments on Guana Cay are the Orchid Bay Yacht Club & Marina and the Baker's Bay Golf & Ocean Club development at the extreme northerly end of Guana Cay, which is helping to firmly put Guana Cay on the map as a must see and attractive investment opportunity. Guana Cay offers an excellent selection of luxury beachfront homes and beachfront residential lots. Most other properties on Guana Cay are either ocean view properties and/or near to Guana Cay’s fabulous Atlantic Ocean beaches.

Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas

Green Turtle Cay, one of the charming cays situated just off the Abaco Bahamas mainland, was the second largest city in the Bahamas in the 1800's. It is accessed from mainland Abaco by a 15 minute ferry ride on the established and punctual Green Turtle Cay Ferry Service. Today the year round population is less than one thousand people. The residents are mostly engaged in fishing, construction and tourism. This settlement began with the Loyalist in 1783, making it one of the oldest in the Bahamas. This is the home of world famous artist Alton Lowe. Strolling along the paved roads you will meet with the warm and engaging locals who will make you feel like this is your home away from home. Seeing the historic village of New Plymouth takes you back in time where you expect to see pirate ships coming in the harbour. You walk back in time with the contrasts of the narrow streets and brightly painted Caribbean style cottages surrounded by white picket fences, curly tail lizards and vibrantly coloured flowers. Visiting the settlement's Albert Lowe Museum and the Sculpture garden are a bonus of this small island's history. Dine at one of the island's delicious eateries, order a tropical drink, relax and enjoy the sunset.

For your permanent retirement home or personal tropical island retreat residence, Green Turtle Cay offers a wide selection of luxury beachfront homes, charming ocean view homes and vacant residential parcels.

Green Turtle Cay is an excellent location choice for a relaxing Bahamas vacation getaway. Several excellent vacation rental accommodations can be found on Green Turtle Cay, including beachfront cottages, sea view villas and oceanfront homes. Abaco Estate Services offers a wide selection of rental properties on the Vacation Rentals section of our website.

There are numerous activities to choose from, but being lazy with a good book on the beach is one of the best choices, if not there is fun in the sun. The village of New Plymouth offers golf cart rentals, boat rentals, several restaurants, three grocery stores, two hardware stores, boutiques, gift shops, an art gallery and all manner of crafts. Also, in the White Sound area, there are two restaurants and Brendal's Dive Shop. On the southern tip of Green Turtle Cay there is a large sand bar, where shell collecting is a sport. Spend a day snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the Sea of Abaco or explore the many Atlantic Ocean reefs, just a short distance offshore. Enjoy the pleasures of a fishing charter for ocean sports fishing, or contact one of the many local fishing guides and experience the excitement of bone fishing. Green Turtle Cay also offers shipyards with dry boat storage facilities.

Hope Town, Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas

Hope Town on Elbow Cay is “picture perfect” and looks like you are in Paradise, the views make anyone want to be a photographer. The famous candy striped red and white light house over looks most of Hope Town and looks like a mother watching over her children. Hope Town was founded by the Loyalist Wyannie Malone and her family in 1785 and resembles New England with clapboard, brightly colored homes and white picket fences with the flamboyant tropical gardens.

When exploring the village, the streets may seem like sidewalks to you and are lined with rainbow colors of local flowers especially the bougainvillea and hibiscus of every shade. There is no motorized traffic allowed within the village, so walking or bicycling are your only options. Boats of every shape and description pass through the protected Hope Town Harbour. The Wyannie Malone Museum is one of the most popular sites to see. Named after the founder of this settlement, it is filled with historic photos, documents, maps, quilts, china, simple treasures and other heirlooms of the past. For those who want to see the independent and extraordinary survival skills of these brave original loyalists, you will see it continues on in the present day local residents. Located in the village of Hope Town, one will find two grocery stores, Harbour View Grocery on the edge of the harbour and Vernon's Grocery on Back Street, known for their fresh baked bread and delicious home-made pies. Within the village of Hope Town one will also find art galleries, bike rentals, boat rentals, golf cart rentals, sports fishing charters, dive shop, clothing shops, several gift and jewelry boutiques, hardware store, a coin-operated laundry, liquor store, telephone company, marinas, and Assembly of God and St. James Churches.

Elbow Cay boasts so many different restaurants, bars and eateries that it is a challenge choosing where to eat or hang out, Abaco Inn or Hope Town Harbour Lodge or Firefly Resort, to name a few are well worth trying.

Elbow Cay offers a high concentration of fabulous luxury beachfront homes directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Elbow Cay also offers dry storage and dockage at Lighthouse Marina and fantastic shelling on famous Tahiti Beach.

Man-O-War Cay, Abaco, Bahamas

Man-O-War Cay is known for its established tradition of boat building and craftsmanship history, where it flourishes here as it did centuries ago. Being a very christian community, holding to its traditional past, there are no bars or liquor stores on Man-O-War Cay. In addition to part-time residents and vacation homeowners, there are less than 500 permanent residents on this Cay. The first settlers were farmers in 1820. In the early 20th century they began to build boats.

Man-O-War Cay offers several quaint gift shops, two grocery stores, bakery, boat rentals and golf cart rentals, all set amongst private homes, churches, a schoolhouse and the post office. Two unique gift shops are Joe’s Studio offering hand crafted items made of Abaco wood and Albury's Sail Shop where you can watch them make sturdy, colorful canvas bags and other unique canvas products. There are magnificent white sand Atlantic Ocean beaches with rock outcroppings and reefs for you to explore. Fowl Cay Preserve, a national underwater sea park, lies just north of Man-O-War Cay. One can also take a daily scheduled ferry for a full day of exploring. When visiting by boat you can come into Man-O-War Marina and walk around while the Captian fuels up the boat. If you would like to invest in a tranquil Man-O-War Cay beachfront home or waterfront residence with dockage, then Man–O-War Cay or Dickies Cay, which forms the protected harbour, could be the perfect spot.
